Description
TRiO Counselor at Carteret Community College in Morehead City:  MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree in counseling or social work.  Experience working with disadvantaged populations is required. Experience in a postsecondary institution and being a first-generation student is preferred. Counselor, Student Support Services, TRIO
Statement of Primary Purpose
Provide counseling support to students participating in the TRiO program.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Provides comprehensive personal, social, academic and career counseling services to participants;
  • Provides the intake process for new project participants;
  • Administers interest, skills, or values assessments to participants to aid in academic and personal development;
  • Helps participants develop time management skills;
  • Develops profiles of individual participants which outline barriers to success in the project and strategies for overcoming these barriers;
  • Maintains documentation for project evaluation and assists with annual evaluation;
  • Collaborates with project staff to provide individualized services for students;
  • Monitoring and intervention to maximize student progress;
  • Aids program associate in advertising project activities
  • Assesses students’ mental health needs and refers students to appropriate community/professional  resources;
  • Develops and facilitates workshops for participants in life, parenting, social skills;
  • Assists with all project activities;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities

Writing, in conjunction with students, their Individual Development Plans for each semester. Learning styles, educational coaching and career advising. Teaching of academic skills (note taking, test taking, using college texts, time management). Evaluation of students’ academic skills and monitoring of academic progress. Personal counseling as it relates to student's academic performance and life enhancement.  Refer to mental health professionals if necessary.

Minimum Qualifications
Education Master’s degree in counseling or social work.

Working Conditions and Environment (i.e., necessary travel, unusual work hours, unusual environmental conditions, etc.)
Work is performed entirely indoors.  Only light physical effort is required.
Equipment Operation
This position description covers the most essential functions and duties associated with this position.  Other duties may be assigned by the President or appropriate supervisory personnel.  The College reserves the right to alter duties, responsibilities, conditions, working hours, and job title as necessary.
